Obituary of Edward R. Wells

Edward Robert Wells, Sr. passed away on Saturday, January 11th at the age of 87, surrounded by family and loved ones.

He is predeceased by his parents John and Mary (Halsack) Wells and his brother, John Wells.  Ed was born in Atlantic City, NJ on July 24, 1937, and baptized at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Atlantic City.  He received his sacraments of First Communion, Confirmation and Matrimony at Immaculate Conception Church in Trenton, NJ.  He lived in Lawrenceville, NJ from 1961 to 2022, before relocating to Maplewood Princeton in Plainsboro, NJ where he received the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. Ed remained a member of the Church of St. Ann since becoming a parishioner in 1966. 

Ed met the love of his life, Bettie (Curlis) Wells in Trenton, NJ and married in 1959. Together they raised three children and were loving grandparents to their 4 grandchildren. Bettie cherished Ed and was a devoted wife for over 65 years. She became his steadfast caregiver during the last several years of his life.

In his younger years, Ed served his country as a Yeoman 3rd Class Petty Officer with the US Naval Reserve. He worked as a plant manager in plastics and furniture manufacturing for many years before transitioning into furniture sales. He was an ardent hunter, fisherman, and tennis player. In 2000, Ed retired and spent his free time enjoying golf, bocce, gardening, and travel with his family.

As a lifelong fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, and Sixers, Ed raised his three children to participate in and enjoy athletics. He coached boys and girls soccer in the Lawrence Hammett League, as well as Junior Babe Ruth Baseball and Softball.

Ed actively served as Church usher, P.T.A. President and sang in the St. Ann Resurrection and Adult Choirs.  He was a dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus Council #7000 and a 4th degree Knight of the Bishop Griffin Assembly. He volunteered his time and passionately supported the Special Olympics for six years.

Ed leaves his loving wife of over 65 years, Elizabeth (Bettie Curlis) Wells.  His daughter, Theresa Falzon and her husband, Charles; son, Edward Jr. and his wife, Laura; and his son, Eric and his wife Connie as well as grandchildren, Jonathan Falzon, Rachel Falzon, Ian Wells and Brent Wells.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 16, 2025 from 10-11AM in the daily chapel at The Church of St. Ann, 1253 Lawrence Road, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648.  A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:00AM.

Interment will be held at Lawrenceville Cemetery.  

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The Church of St. Ann in memory of Edward Wells, Sr.
