Obituary of Howard Cameron Dunn
Howard C. Dunn II, 92, of Woodstown, passed away on Monday, October 7, 2024 at Friends Village Assisted Living in Woodstown, NJ. Arrangements: Poulson & Van Hise Funeral Directors, Lawrenceville, NJ.
Born and raised in Palmyra, Howard was a graduate of The George School where he met a young woman named Janet Haines with whom he would share 68 years of marriage. Howard attended Ithaca College where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Education and was a standout athlete in football, wrestling and track and field for the Bombers. Following graduation, Howard and Janet moved to Morristown, NJ where Howard worked for the New Jersey Bell Telephone Company. The Dunn family later moved to Lawrenceville, New Jersey, when Howard began his career as the Director of Data Processing and Assistant Professor at Mercer County Community College, retiring in 1997 after more than 25 years of service. Howard and Janet spent much of their time in retirement enjoying their cottage on the Delaware Bay in Elsinboro. They also resided in Robbinsville for many years prior to moving to Woodstown in 2021. In his younger days, Howard enjoyed spending his time fishing and boating on the Delaware Bay.
In retirement, he was an avid golfer and refined his game at the Salem Country Club. Playing well into his eighties, he was thrilled to finally shoot his age. Howard was also a world traveler and visited places such as Vatican City, Africa, and Costa Rica, and enjoyed sharing stories of these places with his family and others. There wasn’t a crossword puzzle, trivia game or card game that he didn’t enjoy, believing that if you weren’t cheating, you weren’t trying. Howard loved to watch a variety of sporting events, relishing competition of any kind; he took to heart the saying “Just win, baby!” of his beloved Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders. Howard also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially vacations to Ocean City, NJ, the Outer Banks and Florida. He will be remembered by his family for his competitive spirit, his generosity, and his trademark response of “I am Simply Splendid” when asked about his well-being.
Predeceased by his wife, Janet Haines Dunn, his parents, Louise (nee Hall) and Dr. William Roland Dunn, his brother, William Dunn, his sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth Mutch and Dr. John Mutch, and his brother-in-law C. Carlton Read, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Mary Dunn (and her children) of Elmer, NJ; his daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Richard Taylor of Southport, NC; his granddaughter Emilie Carlson and her husband, Matthew of Awendaw, SC; his grandson Thomas Taylor and his wife Hadley of Durham, NC; his great-granddaughter, Sarah Carlson, and his great-grandson, Eli Carlson; his sister-in-law, Debra Read of Woodstown, NJ; and several nieces and nephews.
