We are so sad to learn of Scott’s passing. He was a loyal friend to us since high school, even checking in on us after a tornado hit our town in 2005. We share many great memories of him: marching band trips, playing one of his compositions in Wind Ensemble, golf outings (which were really minor adventures), visits to our home, connecting at Flags of Freedom. He had a high bar for music performance and a great ear for sound, being able to mimic birdsong and sound effects with ease. He was clever and creative. He will be missed.
With love from your Class of ‘80 friends,
Russ Melland and Chris Miller Melland

I worked with Scott at ETS on occasional test development projects. I mostly saw him on campus from time to time in passing or in the cafeteria. Whenever I saw him, we would chat and laugh about everyday things. His personality was very uplifting and he was always a highlight of my day.

Scott was a good friend way back in high school. His enthusiasm in general, and for music specifically, was contagious. He was composing, conducting and playing French Horn with great abandon back in the Sun Prairie HS days. We had a lot of good times together. Scott will be missed.

Scott was a valued member of the V-ETS (Veterans at ETS) Business Resource Group. He was an eager participant at each meeting and offered thoughtful and helpful insight during all our discussions. We thank Scott for his service to his country and we extend our deepest condolences to his family.

I remember interviewing Scott at ETS 29 years ago. He was incredibly personable! Also qualified and eager, so he was hired for a 6-month gig as my replacement, to work on the music tests while I was out on maternity leave. He did such a terrific job, of course, that everyone wanted him to stay on and he did. He was a great colleague--smart, talented, and incapable of doing anything other than a great job. But mostly I will remember his wacky sense of humor and that he always tried to do the right thing.

Although I didn’t work directly with Scott, we occupied the same building for several years. In 2008, he wrote three original arrangements of classical Christmas songs. Under his direction, we surprised coworkers by playing in the company foyer. It was a special event that I’ll always remember - Scott obviously was on French horn! I am honored to have seen him share his passion with people in that moment.

I’ve worked at ETS for many years, and I’ve known Scott for most of those years. He was a cheerful and funny (in a slightly sardonic sort of way) presence on campus. Even though we didn’t work closely together, I always enjoyed running into him and having a conversation about life at ETS and life generally. He was definitely a natty dresser, as others have commented, and he seemed to have boundless energy. I know he loved the outdoors and kept very active. In fact, the last time that I saw him, he was dressed up in his biking gear and headed out for a ride somewhere or another. I like to think that he’s still on that ride.

I have worked with Scott for many years, and have known him to have a straight moral compass, a deep sense of empathy, beautiful talent, extraordinary intelligence, and a strong work ethic. Yet none of these serious qualities stopped Scott from having fun! I remember laughing until my face hurt when he entertained colleagues at lunch in the ETS cafeteria. His impressions, antics, and unique interpretations were hilarious.
I am grateful to have known Scott. Wishing his family, friends, and colleagues comfort and peace in happy memories.

It's a pleasure to have had the chance to work with Scott on the Praxis teacher licensure tests. Scott is a passionate and dedicated test developer who is also fun to work with and talk to! So sad to see him leaving us only at the age of 62, but he has lived an active and fulfilling life pursuing his passion and interest. He will live on in our memories.

I've worked at ETS for many years and I always enjoyed being around Scott. He was fun loving and funny, and widely known for being a sharp dresser. So many times looking out my window, I'd see Scott bounding along somewhere, dressed in a natty sportcoat with his sunglasses on. He had style! I know he loved the outdoors and kept active. In fact, I think that the last time I saw him in the office, he was heading out in his bike-riding gear for a long ride somewhere or another. I like to imagine him being still on that ride. I'll miss him.

Still in shock about my music buddy Scott. Had the honor of performing with him in a few orchestras in NJ, as well as having him record several of those same orchestras when he wasn’t playing himself. Since I often sat in the back of the violin section, I would usually be right next to the French horns, so Scott would say he was my stand partner, and he was one of my best ones. His love of music, recording, the arts, and life itself will be greatly missed, along with his marvelous sense of humor. My deepest condolences to his partner Helen, and all his family. Scott is one of the best Men I’ve ever met, thanks for sharing him with us. Jenise Grice-Reedus, violinist

Scott was the very definition of sui generis, always following his own path. Whether playing the French horn in the ETS parking lot, coming to work in precisely accurate Revolutionary War regalia, or teaching our cats to fly, he went as his spirit moved him. But he was no mere eccentric. A deeply ethical and caring man, he took extraordinary care of Helen, served truth and beauty as he understood them, and never abandoned his principles. I will bitterly miss him.
