I was looking for any information about Elaine and now have learned of her passing. I am so sorry and send heartfelt condolences to her family. I knew Elaine through my former husband, David Taylor formerly from Metuchen. Elaine kindly took (brother) Frank under wing as his first grade teacher. A lifelong friendship ensued. She was always a kind and generous lady. I had the pleasure of visiting with her many times as well as exchanging Christmas cards for many many years. And the ultimate pleasure of the most delicious cookies! I was looking for her to let her know of Frank’s passing recently. May their paths cross and friendship continue.

I always enjoyed family gatherings with Aunt Elaine and my cousins. Elaine did some knitting, and made me a sweater in my choice of colors. I chose blue and green and wore that sweater all the time for a while. As an adult, it was nice talking with Elaine about teaching and sometimes politics. Though I hadn’t seen her for a while, I will miss her.

Dear Mom,
It's difficult to find words to thank you for all you have done for me - you accepted an 18 year old from Croatia, treated him like a son ever since, and watched him go through all the life challenges. Your emotional, moral and every other support meant more than you will ever know. I would not have become the person I am without seeing you as an example to emulate in so many ways. You will always have a most special place in my heart, Mom, and will be in my thoughts and memories as long as I live.
Forever your son,
Gordan

Grammy,
I will always remember growing up and excited to see and grandpa in Lawrenceville. I remember we called you granny run run cause we could never keep up with you in the stores lol. You always were making and or putting packages together for the soldiers, baking cookies and loved your vanilla ice cream after dinners. I remember staying over so the next day me and grandpa could go out and early to the golf course and play our hearts out. Even when you both moved to freehold and we still all got together, dinners, or small visits. When I would drive over to see you and we made cookies a few times together, I’ll always keep those photos and treasure all the memories we had. You were the best Grammy, I’m so glad to have you part of my life. It’s not a goodbye, it’s a see you later. I love you always Grammy, I’m glad you are with grandpa and laughing, catching up and being our guardian angel.

Elaine was a true American! Her love for her adopted troops will be remembered for ever. She was so very kind to so many of us and truly paid it forward. I will always remember our trips to Ft. Bragg, her famous chocolate chip cookies and raspberry brownies. Most of all her friendship to my mother-in-law and my family will never be forgotten. Heaven has a new angel. Rest in Peace Elaine you certainly have earned it ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I remember interviewing Elaine Harmon to teach First Grade in Lawrenceville Elementary School. I knew she would be a great teacher, but she was even more than great she was one of the Best of the Best. She had a Magical Classroom that made every child feel joyful, hopeful, important and ready to learn. She was my very best friend, colleague and risk taker in education for over 30 precious years. This is how I will remember Elaine Harmon. "Don't spend of your precious time asking Why isn't the World a better place" It will only be time wasted. The question to ask is "How can I make it better" The answer is simple. Walk in the very large footprints of Elaine Harmon.

Elaine was a good friend and very kind soul with a big heart. She kindly allowed her husband and I to pursue our mutual love of steam locomotives to the hilt without ever uttering a word of disapproval.
I'm confident she is now reunited with her beloved John and glad to be there.
R.I.P. good friend.

Elaine’s profound impact on my life as a young soldier and beyond is immeasurable . I can recall the first letter I ever received from her while on deployment to Kosovo in 1999. I had never heard of adopt-a-platoon. The incredible thing was that I didn’t realize I had a need for someone like Elaine to show her love and commitment to soldiers serving abroad and at home. Her impact will continue to be reflected in the untold number of soldiers she supported who now pay it forward in honor of Elaine’s great sacrifice for all of us when many of us needed just one person to acknowledge us. God speed Elaine.
