Richard Thomas Smith ,78 of Columbus, New Jersey passed away on Saturday, March 26, 2022 at home. Born in Trenton, NJ, he was a longtime resident of and Ewing Township, Yardville, and Columbus New Jersey. Richard was a graduate of Notre Dame High School - Class of 1962. He attended Rider College and Saint Francis School of Nursing. Richard served as a Medic in the US Navy for four years and was station in Newport Rhode Island. He received an Honorable Discharged for his devoted service. Richard worked hard and held many jobs and careers. He retired from the State of New Jersey Department of Administrative Law after 9 years. He worked for General Motors for 11 years in Ewing. He also worked for Blakely Laundry for 10 years in his early years and also for St. Francis Hospital. Most recently he was employed by Manheim of New Jersey in Bordentown as a Driver. Richard love sharing his time with his loving wife Patricia (Patty) for 38 wonderful years of marriage, they took rides, going to the lighthouse, casinos, out to dinner, going to the Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Doylestown, PA, Peddlers Village, or walking and sitting by the Lake at Mercer Park. They loved just being with each other, talking and laughing. Richard loved to play golf, play cards, read a good book, or doing 750 puzzle pieces. When he could be with his children, he loved playing games, fooling and joking around and laughing. Richard love watching WWF and loved fishing with the children and being with them when he could and grandchildren when he could share the time with them. He always loved Father’s Day when his children took him fishing and just being together having fun. Richard also enjoyed playing cards, bingo and laughing with his sisters. Richard loved his Catholic Faith meant a lot to him as he came from a family that his uncle Father Thomas Nolan of Englishtown, his aunt, Sister Grace Nolan, Sisters of Mercy Station in Atlantic City and work for Catholic Charity. Richard was a loving and devoted husband to Patty and a good father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend who be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Richard was the son of the late Theodore and Elizabeth Nolan Smith and son in-law to the late Charles and Dorine Kroger Taranowicz, he is survived by his loving wife of 38 years Patricia Taranowicz Smith daughters Kristen Smith, Kathleen and Thom Maxwell and son Jeffrey and Kim Ferguson Smith and three grandchildren Tommy and Maggie Maxwell and Jackson Smith. Richard was the brother to Paul Smith and brother-in law to the late Ruth Smith Brother to the late David Smith, brother-in law to Mary K. Smith , Sisters to Mary E. Smith and Terry Johnson and Brother-In Law to Charlie Johnson. brother to the late Steve Smith and brother-in law Janice Wisniewski Smith Crane, brother in-law to late Bernadette Bac and brother in-law to Gregory Bac of , brother-in law to the late Barbara Czepiga and brother-in law Walter Czepiga, brother-in law to Catherine Vasil and brother-in law Michael Vasil; also several nieces, and nephews and great nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 5, 2022 at 11AM at The Church of St. Ann, 1253 Lawrence Road, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648. Interment will follow at St. Hedwig Cemetery, Ewing Twp. The visitation for Richard will be held on Tuesday, morning from 9:30-11:00AM in the daily chapel at the church. Memorial contributions can be made to The Church of Saint Ann Church, or Jefferson Hospital of Philadelphia, Notre Dame High School, or to the American Cancer Society of Mercer County New Jersey.
