Obituary of George Zaharchuk

George Zaharchuk, 92, died on Monday, September 19, 2016 of a stroke, in the company of his three children.
Born in Jersey City, the youngest son of Russian immigrants George and Julia Zaharchuk, George grew up in Florence, NJ. He was predeceased by his sister Alice and brother Bill. In 1943, he graduated from Bordentown High School and joined the US Navy. A veteran of WWII he spent three years on LST 530 in Europe and the Pacific. He returned to Normandy in 2014 to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of D-Day and was named an honorary Citizen of France. George studied accounting at Trenton State College. He married Daria Bonderchuk in 1949 and became a partner in Bonderchuk Chevrolet in Hamilton. He later worked as an insurance auditor and accountant. He was predeceased by Daria and married Kay Skordinski in 1964. As a resident of Hamilton Township for over 40 years, he enjoyed gardening, travel, and entertaining friends and family around his swimming pool. He was a parishioner and former treasurer of St. Vladimir Orthodox Church in Trenton and member of the Hamilton Senior Center. He lived an active life at Meadow Lakes in East Windsor. He was an advocate of exercise and a devoted Phillies fan. George will be remembered for his ready smile, kind words, and tremendous gratitude for his blessed life. He cherished his family and friends and was quick to share a story.
George is survived by his children and their spouses -- Kyra Duran (Phil), Dr. Greg Zaharchuk (Mimi) and Myra Lee (Bernie); and was the proud grandfather of seven – Ronald and Loriann Wong, Alexis Duran, Owen and Paige Lee, and Kenji Zaharchuk and Noah Murase. He also is survived by great-grandson Connor Wong, his sister in law Joan Zacharchuk, and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Saturday, September 24, 2016 at 10AM at St. Vladimir's Orthodox Church at the corner of Stanton & Grand Streets in Trenton.
Burial will follow at St. Vladimir's Cemetery, Lilly Street & Hunt Avenue in Hamilton Township.
Calling hours will be Friday, September 23, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Poulson Van Hise Funeral Directors, 650 Lawrenceville Road, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648.
