Walter Krech, 87, of Lawrenceville died peacefully at home on Monday, June 6.
Walter was was born in Jersey City, NJ on September 6, 1923. He graduated from Dickinson High School in Jersey City and went onto serve honorably as a radioman in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1945.
Following his service in World War II he worked at the Western Electric Corporation in Jersey City before joining the New Jersey State Police in August of 1949 and moving to Titusville, NJ. The family moved to Lawrenceville in 1961. Walter proudly served in the State Police until his retirement as a Captain in 1978. During his tenure with “The Outfit” he was a member of the first NJSP dive team and a distinguished expert marksman. He also served as an instructor and coordinator with Civil Defense/Disaster Control and finally as head of the Logistics Bureau.
After his first retirement he worked as the Director of Security for The First National Bank of Princeton and then United Jersey Banks and later on for Merrill Lynch in Plainsboro, NJ. He was a past president of the Holy Innocents Society of Trenton and an active member of American Legion Post 414 in Lawrenceville. He was a member of the Board of Directors of The New Jersey Former Troopers Association, serving as treasurer for many years and also being honored as a Former Trooper of the Year.
Son of the late Paul and Anna Krechkowski, brother of the late Michael Kosky and Stella Pesci, and father of the late Judy, who died in childbirth, Walter is survived by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy Anna Bartzak Krech, a son Robert Krech and his wife Karen, daughter Jane Krech, and daughter Dorothy Monfre and her husband, Dr. Stephen Monfre. Walter loved spending time with his four grandchildren, Andrew Krech, Faith Krech, Garrett Monfre, and Evan Monfre.
Walter’s funeral will be held on Saturday beginning at 9 AM at Poulson & Van Hise Funeral Directors, 650 Lawrence Road, Lawrenceville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM at the Church of St. Ann, Lawrenceville. Private burial will be in the NJ State Police Memorial Garden.
Friends may call on Friday from 3 to 5 PM and 7 to 9 PM at the funeral home.
